FAQs
1. When and where does Energy Matters meet? Energy Matters hosts a monthly meeting the first Thursday of each month from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the United Way Building located at 1531 13th Street, Columbus, IN. Energy Matters typically meets in the Board Room.
2. How do I become a member of Energy Matters? You can become a member of Energy Matters by completing a Membership Form. You may click the following link to upload the membership form.
3. How can I contact Energy Matters if I have a question? Any questions related to Energy Matters may be directed to info@energymatterscolumbus.org.
4. Can non-members attend the monthly meetings? Non-members are certainly welcome to attend our monthly meetings. Please come ready to learn and ask questions. We hope that after attending a meeting or two you choose to become a member of Energy Matters!
5. What takes place at monthly meetings? Our monthly meetings consist of two parts: an educational portion and a Board of Directors meeting. Past topics of the educational portion include the City of Columbus' New Waste Water Treatment Plant, the Mayor's Recycling Committee, the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District, and the new Commons sustainable design tactics. General members are welcome to stay during the Board of Directors portion of the meeting. During this time, the board typically discusses general organization housekeeping, upcoming events, and educational opportunities.
6. What can I expect with an Energy Matters membership? With a membership to Energy Matters, you can expect opportunities to become involved with local initiatives to create a greener Columbus. Members will learn how they, as individuals, can help fight global warming in Columbus and on a larger scale. Members will also lead their neighbors in the direction of positive environmental change, gain relevant knowledge helpful in making smart energy choices, and be affiliated with a group that is committed to restoring and honoring our Earth. Furthermore, in 2008, Energy Matters members had the opportunity to participate in a trip to the Chicago Center for Green Technology.
7. I would like a representative from Energy Matters to speak at my event. Who should I contact? Speaking requests may be directed to info@energymatterscolumbus.org. When making a request, please leave your name and contact information, name the organization to which the speech will be directed, and a particular topic you are interested in learning about An Energy Matters representative will promptly contact you to schedule a speaking event.
8. I would like to recycle. Where can I recycle in Columbus? The City of Columbus offers several locations to recycle. Please remember that all materials should be rinsed prior to recycling.
The Columbus Bartholomew Recycling Center is located at 720 South Mapleton Street in Columbus. This drive-through facility is open for residential recycling on Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 am - 6:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm. Please visit their website at www.bcswmd.com to learn more about the recycling center and the types of materials accepted.
B. Rumpke offers roll-off recycling containers in the Kroger grocery store parking lot at the corner of U.S. 31 and Central Avenue in Columbus. These Rumpke recycling containers accept #1 and #2 plastics, glass, and metals such as aluminum cans and aerosol cans. C. Abitibi paper recycling bins are located at several locations throughout Columbus. These bins are typically used to help fundraise for location organizations, so you may help a favorate organization raise money and recycle simultaneously! Paper products accepted at Abitibi locations include newspaper, magazines, junk mail, printer paper, and colored paper. You may visit www.bcswmd.com for more information about the Abitibi bins.
9. Does Energy Matters have materials containing information about residential energy savings, LEED buildings, and other energy conscious activities/initiatives? As Energy Matters continues to develop its website, materials containing this helpful information will be uploaded for your reference.
10. What are 3 easy steps I can take to reduce my carbon footprint? A. Plan your weekly errands. Rather than using your car to run errands on an individual basis, plan weekly trips to take care of all your errands at one time. Organizing your time in this way will save more gas than you probably realize!
B. Bike to work once a week. Biking is an enjoyable activity and certainly a great way to start the morning!
C. Use re-usable shopping bags at the grocery store. Keep these bags in your car and they're easy to remember. They're certainly more sturdy than the plastic bags you use otherwise!
